There are seven elements of Interior Design that designers follow when creating, updating, and designing a space.
- Space – the foundation on which the entire design plan is built. A space filled with furniture and décor items is considered Positive Space. Empty space is considered Negative Space. The goal is to find and maintain the right equilibrium between the two.
- Line – the visual guides that create a sense of harmony, contrast, and unity in a living space. There are three types: Horizontal, Vertical, and Dynamic.
- Forms – the shapes or any three-dimensional object in the space. There are two types: Geometric (man-made) and Natural (organic).
- Light – sets the mood and ambience in a living space. Either natural or man-made, without light other elements such as color, texture, and pattern have no significance.
- Color – classified into Primary and Secondary colors, this sets the mood and establishes an aesthetic connection between objects. Each color has three characteristics – Hue, Value, and Intensity – and must be chosen based on the mindset of the client.
- Texture – the way a surface looks and feels. Texture adds depth and interest by defining the feel and consistency of the surface. There are two very broad types of texture: Visual (seen) and Actual (seen and felt).
- Pattern – tells a story and adds elements of continuity to a space. Patterns are often repetitive and attractive and add interest and work with other colors.
