You have pictured the perfect piece of custom furniture, and now it’s time to pick out the fabrics that will bring your dream to life. Before you pick out your fabric, think about how the piece will be used.
Is it in an adult-only space or an all-purpose room?
Will the furniture be used daily or for more formal occasions?
Will the piece of furniture be in direct sunlight?
With your furniture’s use in mind, here’s how to choose the right fabric for you.
Linen: Linen is best suited for formal living or adult areas because it soils and wrinkles easily. The fabric does withstand pilling and fading, but it won’t withstand heavy wear. And, if it is soiled, it must be professionally cleaned to avoid shrinking.
Leather: This material wears well. Leather can be gently vacuumed, wiped down as needed and cleaned with leather conditioner or saddle soap.
Cotton: This natural fiber resists wear, fading, and pilling well. Without fabric protectant, cotton is less resistant to soil, wrinkling, and fire. However, cotton can come in formal weaves or something as casual and durable as canvas.
Silk: Silk is gorgeous for upholstery, but it is very delicate. It should only be used in formal areas that are lightly used. If it should become soiled, it needs to be professionally cleaned.
Wool: Wool is a durable fabric and water repellent. It is usually blended with another, synthetic fiber to make it easier to clean. If it is a blend, it can be spot cleaned.
Acrylic: Used as an imitation wool, this material resists wear and is lightweight, and the better-quality acrylics are manufactured to resist pilling.
Microfiber: This is very durable and easy to clean. Microfiber does not stain or wrinkle easily so it works well for daily use.
Vinyl: Vinyl is very easy to care for and less expensive than leather. This is perfect for high traffic living rooms and children’s furniture.
