Elegant duvet covers can transform the look of a bedroom, and make it easy to clean your bedding in your own washer. With so many options on the market, choosing a duvet that meets your personal needs while coordinating with your bedroom can become overwhelming. In addition, the price of duvets can easily stretch your budget.
Designing your duvet cover allows you to be as creative as you’d like, and is an alternative to replacing your entire bedding set! By creating your own duvet cover, you can choose the style, color, and fabric to give your bedroom a personal touch.
Follow these simple directions to create your duvet cover.
What you’ll need:
- 2 flat pieces of fabric (slightly larger in size than your duvet)
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Pins
- Velcro tape
- Sewing kit
Step 1: Cut your Fabric- Cut the width of the fabric the same size as the duvet, plus an additional 2’’ for the seams. The length should measure the length of the duvet, plus 3’’.
Step 2: Sew the Sides- With the insides facing each other, sew around three edges of the cover, one inch from the edge of the fabric. Leave one of the shorter ends unstitched, which will serve as the opening of the cover.
Step 3: Turn Inside Out- Press and sew 5/8-inch seam covering the seam allowance of your first seam.
Step 4: Turn Right-Side Out- Press again.
Step 5: Narrow the Opening- Starting from either corner of the open side, sew in about 18’’ towards the center. Leave a large enough gap for the duvet to fit through.
Step 6: Press the Seams- Press then divide the opening into thirds. Mark each spot with a pin – make sure the sides match up.
Step 7: Velcro- Stitch 1.5’’ Velcro closures to the inside flaps of the opening, sewing all the way around the Velcro perimeters.
Step 8: Seal the Deal- Slip in the duvet and seal the Velcro.
